Finish the Race

Paul is writing his final letter to Timothy as he sits in a Roman prison awaiting death. Paul had lived a fruitful life since his conversion on the road to Damascus and now he is encouraging Timothy to keep pressing on into ministry, guarding the gospel, fighting the fight, and finishing the race. Was Paul successful? Was Timothy successful? How do we gage success in life and ministry? The book of 2 Timothy answers these questions, as Paul finishes his discipleship relationship with Timothy.

Preach the Word

If we relegate the preaching of God’s Word, our church will be forgotten. We must be known as a Bible preaching church until Jesus brings us home. Our concern must not be for ourselves only. We cannot allow our generation to be the last at EBC. What kind of church will we pass on to our children’s children? Are we too short-sighted? If the Lord tarries another 400 years, will Edgewood Bible Church, still be a Bible church?

Trust the Bible

William Tyndale paid a great price to get the English bible into the hands of his people. He believed that having the Bible in our own language was vital, but have we moved on from the Bible? How big of a priority is the Bible for our lives? Do we trust the Bible? Is the Bible sufficient for us? Wayne Grudem has a helpful definition: The sufficiency of Scripture means that: it contains all the words of God he intended his people to have in each stage of redemptive history, and it now contains everything we need God to tell us for salvation, for trusting him perfectly, and for obeying him perfectly. Scripture contains everything we need for salvation.
We should be Bible people, who trust the Bible because it is God's word, because it teaches us how to live and because it will completely equip us for every good work.

Keep on Growing

The Apostle Paul expected persecution right from the start of ministry, as the Lord would communicate with him through Ananias: “I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” Paul knew that was what his life would be, exceedingly so. And he knows this is what is in store for his disciple Timothy. He will face persecution, he should expect it. And while he waits, he needed to keep growing in godliness. He needs to keep pursuing Christ. Last week we looked at the first 9 verses of 2 Timothy 3 of the worthless lives of the false teachers and this week we will look at the worthy life to emulate.

Understand the Times

We are living in the last days, as Paul will remind us. We need to understand the times, we need to understand the lives of false teachers and the ministry that they propagate. God will not abandon his church. In a day where politics consumes our headlines more than anything, we need to be reminded friends, that before there was ever a United States of America, there was the church. And after there is a United States of America, there will be the church. The nation is an experiment, the church church is a certainty. I pray that through this series we would learn to love the church more, trust God increasingly and look forward to the hope we have when this life is over.

Be a Worker

Are you useful? Have you ever asked that question? We all want to be found useful in this life. Paul is going to show us two ways for Timothy to live, for the Christian to live. You will have a useless life, centered on yourself and your ways, or you will have a useful life centered on Christ and His ways.
